Had a minor freakout about swine flu this morning and bought hand sanitizers for my coworkers when I was at Walgreens.

What impact -- if any -- will a swine flu pandemic have on the struggling economy?

Specter: This is why parties shouldn't actively support primary contenders against an incumbent who will otherwise easily win reelction.

The problem w/ moving is that once you start thinking about it, you see other things -- eg, furniture -- that could also use some updating.

Torture

OK, I'm pretty mad today. Reports are out today indicating that one of --if not the only -- goal of the torturing that's been in the news recently was to get prisoners to (falsely, as we now know) give information about an Iraq/Al Qaida connection. If these reports are accurate -- and I don't know that they are, nor do I think we should assume they are -- this means we were torturing people to elicit false confessions for political gain. We need an investigation ASAP to determine the validity of this claim. And if it proves to be true, I don't see how can't move forward with prosecutions for everyone involved -- and I mean everyone up through the president. We need to make it clear that this behavior is unacceptable.

This is an about-face from my earlier take on this torture stuff, where I wanted to get the truth out but didn't think there was much -- except political gridlock -- to be gained from prosecutions. But now there's much more at stake, and we need to make it clear that -- if this happened -- things went much too far. And for that there must be consequences. I'm not saying we lock everyone up and throw away the key, but we need a trial and if that's the outcome, I wouldn't be upset.

Columbine

Today is the tenth anniversary of the school shootings at Columbine High School in Colorado. If you're interested in a comprehensive look at the tragedy, including quite a bit of mythbusting, I recommend the book pictured here. I read it over the weekend and found it very enlightening. But, given its subject, it's also a very depressing book, so be aware of that before you dive in.

STLtoday.com: Battle over smoking looms in Clayton
The owners of some of Clayton's best-known restaurants -- Cafe Napoli, Dominic's Trattoria and Jimmy's on the Park among them -- are gearing up to fight a proposal to ban smoking in public places.

But city officials say public opinion appears to be running in the other direction.
