David is an occasional blogger, software engineer, Nintendo fanboy, liberal, news magazine addict, voracious TiVo user, and bibliophile. He was born in St. Louis, grew up in southern Indiana, and returned to St. Louis to attend Washington University. He hasn't managed to escape yet. He's a fan of free wine tastings, too many tv shows to name, and eating out. David makes his living developing web applications used internally by his employer. He doesn't blog about work because he's heard too many stories about that causing workplace troubles. There's more on the about page. |

« Letterman is in classic form as he rips into John McCain. | Main | The weather’s great, the fountains are running, and I’m chilling outside today. »
So we’re further from a bailout now than we we’re when John McCain suspended his campaign with the promise that he wouldn’t resume until a deal was reached, but now his campaign (and the debate) are back on? I guess that’s as clear an indication as you can get that John McCain makes impetuous, rash decisions without thinking things through. He was hoping to parachute in as the deal was finalized, take credit for it, and get back on the campaign trail without missing a beat. (Suspending his campaign apparently only meant pissing off David Letterman.) The Times reported this morning that in yesterday’s White House meeting McCain “sat silently for more than 40 minutes, more observer than leader, and then offered only a vague sense of where he stood.” For a guy who admitted earlier in the week that he hadn’t yet had time to read the (three page long!) Paulson plan, his nonparticipation yesterday makes me wonder if he was keeping his mouth shut because he didn’t know enough to be able to knowledgeably participate. Now that is campaign has magically restarted without a final plan, he looks like we can’t take him at his word any longer. What a huge political mistake he made.
