David is an occasional blogger, software engineer, Nintendo fanboy, liberal, news magazine addict, voracious TiVo user, and bibliophile. He was born in St. Louis, grew up in southern Indiana, and returned to St. Louis to attend Washington University. He hasn't managed to escape yet. He's a fan of free wine tastings, too many tv shows to name, and eating out. David makes his living developing web applications used internally by his employer. He doesn't blog about work because he's heard too many stories about that causing workplace troubles. There's more on the about page. |

Tonight's ballgame is super frustrating. We're in extra innings (bottom of the 13th) and the Cardinals have had the bases loaded a couple of times and been unable to pull the trigger. It's been a pretty sloppy game (the Cardinals made four errors and the Royals tacked on a pair of their own), but it will be quite frustrating if the Redbirds can't pull this off.
[Pujols was just thrown out at 3rd for the second out. Albert's aggressive base running almost always works out to the Cardinals' advantage, but not this time.]
While waiting for the game to end, I've been clearing out the bookmarks in my browser. Here are a few links that I came across that I thought I'd share.
- Baseball Race: A fun web app that lets you view any MLB divisional race as a graphical horse race. The data goes from 1901 to the present.
- pmarca: Marc Andreessen of Netscape fame's new blog
- Gorgeouspil: The latest wacky idea from Alex Chiu, who invented the anti-aging magnet rings. Make sure you click on to the second page of this site. That's where it really gets good.
- Some lingering iPhone questions: A great post on Matt Haughey's blog that covers all the questions I need to get answered as I consider upgrading my razr to the iPhone.
Ludwig just hit a walk-off HR in the 14th, so I can wrap this up. Kip Wells, pitching in relief, got the win tonight. That might be a good psychological boost for a guy who has struggled so much on the mound this year.

OK, I could not have been more wrong about Pirate Master. It's just dumb. Take all the bad things from Big Brother and Survivor, add in some pirate-talk and some people who are pretending to man a ship, and you have Pirate Master. The rules are arbitrary and seemed tilted toward maintaining the status quo, which is a very odd approach to take. The challenges are a joke. The whole thing is dumb, dumb, dumb. Stay away from it at all costs.

The summer is traditionally a bad season for TV viewers. The big networks resort to reruns until their September debuts, with only new reality fare on broadcast TV. Which means cable is where all the good shows are this summer. Gail Pennington had a long article in the paper last week detailing all the summer shows. Below are the shows from her list that I'll be watching.
- "Pirate Master" 7 p.m. Thursday, CBS
- "Hell's Kitchen" 8 p.m. Monday, Fox
- "John From Cincinnati" 9 p.m. June 10, HBO
- "Big Love" June 11, HBO
- "Kyle XY" June 11, ABC Family
- "Top Chef: Miami" June 13, Bravo
- "Hex" June 14, BBC America
- "Meadowlands" 9 p.m. June 17, Showtime
- "The Closer" June 18, TNT
- "Eureka" July 10, Sci-Fi
- "Saving Grace" 9 p.m. July 18, TNT
- "Damages" 9 p.m. July 24, FX

How does the NY Times fill space on their homepage on Friday night? With an article (and picture) about the fact that white kids in Vermont released a rap video about their state on YouTube. That's all that's in the article. Just the fact that these kids made a video where they wrap about their "802" area code, their preference for "extra sharp" cheddar cheese, and their belief the the Birkenstock is the official shoe of Vermont. The article has no real content. My guess is that some reporter was required to file something, so he just browsed YouTube, found a video, made a few calls, and wrote an article. Lame.

There is something extremely ironic about Mary Kalin-Casey, who is in the news because she objects to Google Map's new Street View service, agreeing to be photographed by the NY Times. She is quoted in the article as saying that she "doesn't ... want a shot of [her] sofa on Google." An yet, her sofa is clearly visible in the background of the photo that accompanies the NY Times article. Does she not realize that Google will archive the Times article. Also, the Times' photo is much more revealing than the Street View image.
