David is an occasional blogger, software engineer, Nintendo fanboy, liberal, news magazine addict, voracious TiVo user, and bibliophile. He was born in St. Louis, grew up in southern Indiana, and returned to St. Louis to attend Washington University. He hasn't managed to escape yet. He's a fan of free wine tastings, too many tv shows to name, and eating out. David makes his living developing web applications used internally by his employer. He doesn't blog about work because he's heard too many stories about that causing workplace troubles. There's more on the about page. |

Ben Abell's last day forecasting the weather on KWMU was today. After 35 years on the air, it isn't surprising the KWMU spent a lot of time celebrating his career, but I was surprised when I heard Melissa Block of NPR's All Things Considered interviewing Ben about his retirement. ATC is a pretty big stage for a local meteorologist. But it made me smile. I'll miss Ben.

I'm marking 'Put Down the Book Week,' in which I read no books for the next seven days. Locking up the library makes just as much sense as self-righteously blacking out a pipeline to so much information and entertainment.I'm with Gail on this one. TV Turnoff Week is arbitrary and ridiculous. Why is TV considered so evil that we need to rediscover the joys of not having it on? NPR ran a piece on TV Turnoff week on Morning Edition today and they interviewed a guy whose family was participating. They turned off all TVs and computers and have spent the week playing War and Go Fish. Which sounds like the most boring thing ever.

Nintendo released their end of the fiscal year numbers today and the AP is reporting that profits are up 77% to $1.47b and sales are up 90% to $8.13b over last year. This is particularly impressive because a recent analysis of Microsoft's gaming unit indicated that they had a net loss of $5.4b since inception.

Man, the Times paints a pretty sad picture of St. Louis. Things don't seem nearly that bad to me.

I saw this picture of Don Imus on the slate home page recently and it took me a while to figure out who it was. My initial take on this picture was that it was of a klingon. Now that I know that it's Imus, my only reaction is to think that Imus is a very, very strange looking man.
