Yesterday the Missouri House approved a measure that would repeal the mandatory helmet law for motorcyclists. This is ridiculous. The government should be protecting its citizens from harm, not letting them make foolish decisions. If this were truly about freedom, as the legislators claim, they would have gone along with the amendment that prevents motorcyclists who don't wear helmets from collecting state aid for head trauma related to a motorcycle crash. However, I don't believe even that measure goes far enough. I'm all for freedom, but I want to drive home the consequences of that freedom. I propose that they repeal the law, but also pass a law that prevents motorcyclists who aren't wearing helmets from suing third-parties for any damages related to accidents that result in head trauma. In a nutshell, I don't care who was at fault in an accident. If the motorcyclist wasn't wearing a helmet, they should be wholly responsible for any charges related to head trauma that they sustain. Motorcycle insurance rates would likely go through the roof, but that's only fair as the motorcyclists who want their freedom should have to pay the full cost of it.

Bad news for those of you who enjoy Ben Abell's forecasts on KWMU: he announced last night that he was retiring at the end of April. Sadly, there is no meteorologist in St. Louis quite like Abell. The main thing I enjoy about his forecasts is the insight into how he arrived at the forecast that he drops into the message while telling you what the weather is going to be like. He'll be missed.

I realize that there are lots of comic book fans out there, but why is this article about Captain America (spoiler: he's dead) the lead article on times website. They even have a picture from the article running right up there in the prime news spot. Must be a really, really slow news day.

I don't know how long this link will work, but I found the following headline on the Times today and thought it was pretty funny: "Swiss Accidentally Invade Liechtenstein."
