I still have a mysql databases to transfer over, the archives haven't yet been restored, and I need to fix the comment template, but most things are now back to normal. Of course, as soon as we get this up and running, we're going to have to move it. Our web host is moving to a dedicated server over the weekend, so there will probably be a bit of downtime when we are transferring files and databases to our new server. But this should be a much more structured and transparent move than the last one.

What prompted the switch? I wasn't following much web drama the past week and a half or so, and thus I missed it.

I definitely gave up phpwebhosting for good after my server was down to 100 MB of free disk space. Everybody competing for it meant that nobody got any. I don't know if they had simply overpopulated the machine, or if there were a few folks there who were abusing the so-called "unlimited" disk space.

We abandoned phpwebhosting for a number of reasons. Our server almost never had uptime that exceeded 24 hours. And when it went down it stayed down for at least an hour. Of course, the straw the broke the camels back was our db being corrupted when we reached our account's quota limit and phpwebhosting's failure to respond to any of the tech support messages I sent. They didn't close the issues; they're still open now more than two weeks later.

So we've crossed our fingers and moved to a different host.

But the point you were making, Ben, was pretty much on the money: phpwebhosting promised more than they could deliver. Or maybe they grew too quickly. The really seemed more responsive when we first started up with them than they were over the last year or so. Regardless, if anyone asked I would highly encourage them to look somewhere other than phpwebhosting. Who does your hosting, Ben?

I use Wasabi Hosting (http://www.wasabihosting.com) now. I know (at least to some degree) the person who runs it, and I'm sufficiently confident that he's not going to do anything stupid.

When my year term ends with them, though, I think I may re-evaluate things again.

Why not host the thing at Wash U? I can make sure it has a stable home there.
