fx is running a "The Shield" marathon this week. Two episodes every night until the season finale next Tuesday. "The Shield" is a super-intense cop show, and isn't intended to be watched by kids (there are moments when I have to leave the room because of some of the violence on the screen), but it is an awesome show. You should give it a try.

Do any of you get BBC America on your cable package? If so, you should devote some time to watching "The Office." It plays on Thursdays and Sundays at 9:20pm. Last week, michael, Chris and I watched all of the series one episodes on a dvd I ordered from amazon.co.uk. I had to hack my dvd player, but it was worth it. We just don't get comedy like this in the US. The last office sitcom I saw was "Working" starring Fred Savage, and it was painfully unfunny. I should clarify, "The Office" isn't really a sitcom. It's more of a mockumentary (a fake documentary like Spinal Tap). Anyway, I recommend it, and if you have a region-free dvd player, I'll let you borrow the disc.

Another mammoth grading session tonight. More than eight hours. And I'm sick. I took some Sudafed Night, which cleared up my congestion, but now I'm higher than a kite. Which means my bed is looking more and more appealing.

Tomorrow I have a long list of things to do, none of which will get done: laundry, clean room, grocery shopping, buy cap & gown, order immune system to fight off cold.

Had a brief discussion with Professor Pless about grant proposals when he stopped by while we were grading. I never really understood how grants worked or anything about them before, so it was very interesting.

michael, Ron, and I might be in a studlife article about blogging slated for release on Friday. I haven't heard anything about it since we were interviewed on Wednesday, but I'm hoping it happens. I've been thinking a lot about blogging and why people blog since the interview, and I want to share a few of my ideas, but I can barely type two words in a row correctly right now, so I'll have to put that off until tomorrow.

I wrote two posts about the upcoming war yesterday, but have abandoned both of them. I get too worked up when I find out people are buying into an ideology without really knowing exactly what the ideology stands for. One a separate but related note, online, multiplayer, spaceship fighting games is not the best forum for a political debate. And trying to formulate an argument around the hypothesis that person X is "the devil," therefore everything he or she does is wrong just doesn't work. This is an ad hominem logical fallacy, a textbook one, and doesn't lend any weight to your arguments. Also, I would respect your opinions more if you were actually any good at the online, multiplayer, spaceship fighting game that you choose for your political forum.

It's been suggested to me that apartment 12 should host a subspace party. I'm not sure if this is such a good idea. I'm pretty nerdy, but I've never stooped so low as to attend or hold a "lan party." The Iron Chef idea with pizza served at the end to make up for the hideous food prepared by our contestants seems like a better idea. What do you think?

It was a beautiful day today. The temp was approaching 70, the sun was shining, and I spent two hours sitting on the M&M deck. And seven hours in a conference room grading midterms. Those of you in 527 should thank all of your TAs for staying up until 3am grading midterms. Or at least remember this when we fall behind on grading your homeworks. After all, there are only four of us and seventy of you.

Apparently the subspace bug is contagious. I'm sitting in the ACM lounge right now, and all three computers are in use by subspace players. Comments like "Charlie, I've attached to you," "boom, baby," and "took you out" are flying left and right. We're thinking about downloading the server and getting it up on the WashU network. And I still think ACM needs to have a gaming contest using subspace. It's a pretty easy game to learn, so we could just have everyone play around on it for 30 minutes or so, and then reset the scores and start the match. Or we could randomly put people on teams for capture the flag, and all the players from the winning team would advance to the next round. Or any number of other scenarios.

Anyway, since I mentioned ACM, the second ACM programming contest of the semester is this Friday from 2- 4 pm in the CEC SPARC lab. You should be there. If you know how to code. The problem this week is, I think, a bit easier, so everyone should be able to finish it. And on Thursday is an ACM general meeting, where I'm sure lots of cool things will be discussed. You should be there, too.

I've been playing a lot of subspace during the past couple of days. It took me a while to remember all of the commands for firing different weapons, but I'm doing alright now. I'm not sure what prompted me to d/l the client, since I haven't really played the game since I was in high school.

As an aside, I think its pretty cool that there seems to be a user community working on subspace. When it first came out, it was a commercial product, but apparently its since been released into the public domain.

Anyway, I think it would be pretty cool if acm picked subspace for their next gaming contest. It's supposed to be pretty easy to get the server up and running. They could even let people join in the melee remotely.

...

Oh, I probably won't be back to St. Louis until Tuesday.

Jared is defending Clay Henry.

Jimmy Kimmel: This new guy, Clay Henry, you must want to punch him in the face.
Jared: Clay Henry, he's a great guy, he heard about what I did and decided to do it. It's awesome.

...

Jimmy Kimmel: Ladies and gentlemen: Here's Jared's fat, everyone.
Jared: [Hugs person wearing weird fat outfit.] It's been four years.
Roseanne: I think you need to mate.
David Warner: [Changes channel.]

...

UPDATE: At the end of the show, Jared slow danced with his fat.

Whoa. Channels need to come into focus a bit quicker. I can't take that scrolling thing that happens as channels are coming into tune. Or when you lose reception. Especially now.

Anyway, Jared and I went to Sportsman's tonight. Jared got so drunk that he could barely speak as we drove home. (An off-duty cop had to point him to the exit as we were leaving, and he still walked into the door jam twice as we were leaving.)

Subway Jared is on the Jimmy Kimmel show with Roseanne. I can't make out what he's saying, but no doubt it sucks. It also looks like he's gained some weight.

If you see Jordan
He make me sick
High school's over
And you still won't quit

I'm sitting on the floor of my bedroom right now. Not necessarily the coolest thing in the world, but its something I don't have the space to do in my apartment in St. Louis. Anyway, I'm installing Windows on an old computer that we had sitting in our junk room. My parents are tired of it taking up space, and I don't really need a third computer, so I'm going to give this one to my friend Jared.

What have I been up to this week? On Monday I drove into town, had dinner with my folks, and went out to see Old School with Luke, John, and Cuz. On Tuesday I went out to dinner with Luke and Jared, and hung out with them after dinner. Yesterday was my dad's birthday, so I went out with him and my mom to eat at Cork and Cleaver. I've also been running a bunch of errands while I've been home. Tonight, Jared and I are going out for drinks at some unspecified location.

I'll update you again later this week. I don't know when I'll be back in St. Louis. Maybe Monday, maybe Tuesday.
