july 31, 2001 - 4:34 piem

hazy recollections from early morning:

noise: KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

man: MAINTENENCE!

michael: [awoken and confused] ..could you come back later?

man: were you sleeping?

michael: yes.

man: we just need to check the smoke alarms.  you can stay in bed.

michael: ..okay

michael hides beneath blankets

man: [enters room]

noise of aerosol spray

pause

noise of aerosol spray

pause

man: [quietly, to self] ..damn things not connected.

noise of fiddling with things

noise of aerosol spray

noise of hell unleashing its fury in claxon form

man: [exits room]

I have decided that washington university is a fiery death trap.  last year the fire alarm was nearly inaudible from my room and would not be heard above music, let alone wake me in the middle of the night.  (I informed my RA, but it was never fixed.)  and now I learn that I have been living with a broken smoke detector all summer.

a fiery death trap.
